There are many hidden places in Devbhoomi Uttarakhand which make us believe that it is indeed the abode of the gods. One such place that restores our faith in god is that the famous Patal Bhuvaneshwar Cave cocooned within the ethereal great thing about Kumaon.
Patal Bhubaneshwar Cave is one of the famous pilgrimage sites in Uttarakhand which is located about 14 km from Gangolihat in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand. It is situated at an altitude of 1,350 meters above sea level and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This limestone cave is placed in a small village called Bhubaneswar. Many Puranas or ancient Hindu texts mention the name of Patala Bhubaneswar as a sacred place.
The mystery of end of the world lies in the Patal Bhuvaneshwar Cave:
It is believed that the secret of how the world will end is hidden inside this cave. It is told in Skanda Purana that Lord Shiva resides in this cave along with 64 kotis or deities.
It is mentioned in the Manaskandha, Skandapurana, "He who wishes to feel the presence of eternal power, must come to the holy Bhubaneswar near the confluence of Ramganga, Saryu and Gupta-Ganga."
It has four pillars in the cave which represent the four Yugas i.e. Satyuga, Treta Yuga, Dwapara Yuga and Kalyuga.
There is no change in the shape of three pillars, but the length of the Kalyuga pillar is longer another pillars and the priest of the temple has said that every 7 crore years, the pillar of the Kalyuga grows by an inch.
It is believe that the day the pillar meets the roof the world will end

History of Patal Bhubaneshwar Cave
According to a famous Hindu mythology, this cave was discovered in the 'Treta Yuga' by Rituparna, the king of the Surya dynasty.
It is said that when King Nal lost to his wife Rani Damayanti, he tried to escape from captivity. Raja Nala then requested Rituparna for help and he politely agreed to it.
The Rituparna king took Nal to the thick woods of the Himalayas and asked him to hide there. On the way back, Rituparna was attracted by a beautiful deer. He chased the deer into the forest, but could not be found.
The weary Rituparna then rested under the shade of a tree and had a dream in which a deer was pleading not to chase them. When his sleep provoked Rituparna to go to the cave and upon arriving, he was interrogated by a doomer about his journey.
Satisfied with his answer, the guard allowed him inside. At the entrance of the cave, Riturparna meets Sheshnag who agrees to take him to his hood. Rituparna was mesmerized by the real beauty of the cave and the amazing rock sculptures of the deities installed inside the cave. It is said that after his visit, this cave remained closed for ages, while the Skandapurana did not mention that it would reopen in Kalyug.
In Kalyug, a sage named Shankaracharya discovered this cave on his long journey to the Himalayas.

Mythological stories related to the Patal Bhubaneshwar Cave
It is said that the Pandava brothers of the epic Mahabharata performed a severe penance in this cave before beginning their final journey to the Himalayas.
Patal Bhubaneswar cave is dark, gloomy and mysterious from inside. You can enter your soul through the celestial beauty seen by the eyes.
The major attractions of the cave are rock forms of Hindu deities. You can see Sheshnag while holding earth, heaven and hell. Religious worship is conducted in the attractive light of this cave. Prayers and sacred mantras are used by the priest to awaken the inner consciousness.
It is believed that Patal Bhubaneswar is connected by an underground route to Mount Kailash, the holy abode of Lord Shiva. The cave has four entrances, namely Randavar, Papadwar, Dharamdwar and Mokshdwar. After the death of Ravana, the Papdwar was closed and the second door was called Ranwar which meant that the path of war was closed after the war of Mahabharata. At present only Dharamdwar and Mokshdwar are open.
